    S-Bahn rapid transport system station

The Hamburg Airport S-Bahn rapid transport system station was officially opened on 11th December 2008. It is located directly under the Airport Plaza and is equipped with a modern orientation system; four large lifts and eight escalators which bring travellers directly up to the Plaza and the terminals. The lifts have been designed to allow enough space for travellers to take baggage trolleys with them. The station at Hamburg Airport is served by the S1 line, starting from Hamburg Central Railway Station and running at 10 minute intervals. The journey time is a mere 25 minutes. To avoid passengers to the airport having to change at Ohlsdorf station trains coming from the city centre are separated  – in other words the front section of the train travels on the airport, while the rear carriages terminate in the Poppenbüttel district.

The station at Hamburg Airport is located directly beneath the Plaza

The S-Bahn station at the airport is 260 metres long and has been designed to echo the interiors of the terminals. The floor covering, made from reddish granite, is similar to the floors in the terminals and the Plaza and the vaulted ceiling with roof sails is also reminiscent of the sweeping form of the terminal roofs. A so-called media structure  stretches above the entire approximately 150 metre length of the platform. This structure is a steel construction, upon which the lights and information displays are mounted.
