Expansion and upgrade of air cargo facilities

Growth and a new air cargo centre

Location fixed for new air cargo centre

Hamburg Airport is planning to build a new air cargo centre. The Holiday Car Park (P8) on “Weg beim Jäger” has been designated as the new location for the air cargo facility. The airport is now beginning to plan jointly with air cargo customers how to implement the project.

The 55.000 m² site at the southern end of the airport’s operating area was one of three alternatives and several advantages it offers soon convinced the planners. A valid land-use plan already exists, which ensures the area’s quick availability for development. Furthermore, access to the airport complex can be provided by a tunnel underneath “Weg beim Jäger”. Good traffic links and proximity to important airport partners, such as Lufthansa Technik and Airbus Airspares, are also major plus points.

The airport is now consulting with freight forwarders, air cargo handling companies and airlines to incorporate the latter’s specific requirements into the design of the facility. “Hamburg Airport regards the construction of a new air cargo centre as a sensible alternative to the current site only if we manage to build a facility that is cost-effective for all those involved and that is appealing for its high productivity per square metre and simple and clear process design. The objective is to create a sustainable infrastructure that can accommodate the anticipated growth in air cargo in the metropolitan region of Hamburg“, said Michael Eggenschwiler, CEO of Hamburg Airport. The main features of this air cargo concept, which was developed jointly with customers and allows for a division of responsibilities between the various air cargo sites within the Hamburg Airport region, were approved by the airport’s supervisory board in September.
